Who Is The President Elect - Obama or AIPAC?
|by Sarah Meyer|

I know that when I visit AIPAC I am among friends. Barack Obama.
"Color does not matter when you are in the service of White racist leadership." Jafar Syed .
It is important that President Obama hear well-reasoned, fact-based viewpoints which differ from main-line views. There has been no progress under Bush on so many issues because he disliked discussion and dissent. There will be no progress on Israel/Palestine, for example, if no-one outside of the umbra of AIPAC advises Obama. Peter Beaumont.

Too much hope, expectations that are too high, are both pathological and produce their shadow pathology - disappointment. We saw this earlier after the congressional elections; we are now seeing it again.
Benjamin M. Emanuel, (Wikipedia)
Rahm Emanuel (Wikipedia)
20.10.08. J. Green, Rolling Stone. Friends and enemies agree that the key to Emanuel's success is his legendary intensity. There's the story about the time he sent a rotting fish to a pollster who had angered him. There's the story about how his right middle finger was blown off by a Syrian tank when he was in the Israeli army. And there's the story of how, the night after Clinton was elected, Emanuel was so angry at the president's enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting "Dead! . . . Dead! . . . Dead!" and plunging the knife into the table after every name. "When he was done, the table looked like a lunar landscape," one campaign veteran recalls. "It was like something out of The Godfather. But that's Rahm for you."
Hail to the Chief of Staff
7-9.11.08. Patrick Cockburn, Counterpunch. The first trumpet blast of change ushers in Rahm Emanuel as Obamas chief of staff and gate keeper. This is the man who arranges his schedule, staffs out the agenda, includes, excludes. Its certainly as sinister an appointment as, say, Carters installation of arch cold-warrior Zbigniev Brzezinski as his National Security Advisor at the dawn of his change is here administration in 1977.

07.11.08. bodyonthe line. The Wayne Madsen Report. Obama faced with security problem at outset of transition process. WMR has learned from informed U.S. intelligence sources that prospective Barack Obama White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has an active FBI counter-intelligence file maintained on him. Emanuels rise to the Chief of Staff position may pose a significant security problem for President-elect Obama if the FBI insists on conducting the full background security investigation normally required for senior White House officials. Questions about Emanuels links to the Israeli intelligence service, the Mossad, were allegedly so great that President Bill Clinton was forced to dismiss Emanuel from the White House staff in 1998.
Forget the Honeymoon
07.11.08. Justin Raimondo, anti-war. When the House Democratic majority passed a military appropriations bill slated for Iraq, a clause that would have prohibited an attack on Iran without a vote in Congress was deleted at the instigation of Emanuel and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Does Emanuel Appointment Signal Obama Pro-Israel Tilt?
08.11.08. Richard Silverstein, Huff Post. There seems to be a semi-conspiratorial meme developing in the left blogosphere that Rahm Emanuel's appointment as Obama chief of staff (along with Dennis Ross' potential role at State possibly dealing with Iran or Israel-Palestine negotiations) involves a sort of "pro-Israel fix" in which Aipac guarantees itself both access and an administration fully supportive of Israeli interests. I don't buy it.
Rahm Emanuel: Chief of Staff, All-Around Thug
08.11.08. Dark Wraith, uncaptitalist. President-elect Obama promised during his campaign for the presidency to be a consensus-builder; upon winning the election, he said during his victory speech on the night of November 4, "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree." These words appear to ring hollow now that he has put between him and those who would address him a gatekeeper like Rahm Emanuel, who has no tolerance for disagreement and who has crafted a well-earned reputation for intolerance with troubling tendencies for violent expression of his desire to get his own way. Indeed, Rahm Emanuel has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is "from good Irgun stock."
The Promised Land? Obama, Emanuel and Israel
08.11.08. John V. Whitbeck, Counterpunch / global research. That was always likely. Obama repeatedly pledged unconditional allegiance to Israel during his campaign, most memorably in an address to the AIPAC national convention which Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery characterized as "a speech that broke all records for obsequiousness and fawning", and America's electing a black president has always been more easily imagined than any American president's declaring his country's independence from Israeli domination. / The profound loathing and hatred of the Muslim world toward the United States, which has always had its roots for America's unconditional support for the injustices inflicted and still being inflicted on the Palestinians, can fairly be considered the core of the primary foreign policy and "national security" problems confronting the United States in recent years. Why would Obama, a man of unquested brilliance, have chosen to send such a contemptuous message to the Muslim world with his first major appointment? Why would he wish to disabuse the Muslim world of its hopes (however modest) and slap it across the face at the ealiest opportunity?
09.11.08. Paul Craig Roberts, ICH. Indeed, Obamas selection of Rahm Israel Emanuel as White House chief of staff is a signal that change ended with Obamas election. Rahm Israel Emanuel is a supporter of Bushs invasion of Iraq. Emanuel rose to prominence in the Democratic Party as a result of his fundraising connections to AIPAC. / My despondent friends in the Israeli peace movement ask, What is this man doing in Obamas administration? .. / Obamas advisers are drawn from the same gang of Washington thugs and Wall Street banksters. .. / DENNIS ROSS has long associations with the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. .. Ross is chairman of a new Jerusalem-based think tank, the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute, funded and founded by the Jewish Agency. .. Clearly, this is not a group of advisors that is going to halt Americas wars against Israels enemies or force the Israeli government to accept the necessary conditions for a real peace in the Middle East. If Obama were to reach outside the usual crowd, anyone suspected of being a bringer of change could not get confirmed by the Senate. Powerful interest groups--AIPAC, the military-security complex, Wall Street--use their political influence to block unacceptable appointments.
Obama Mideast Watch: Rahm Emanuel
09.11.08. Scott MacLeod, Time. After hearing of Emanuel's appointment, the paper headlined its next editorial "Don't pin much hope on Obama." Arab expectations, the paper [Arab News] warned, "are likely to be dashed, generating a great deal of pain and resentment...The new team may turn out to be as pro-Israeli as the one it is replacing." / Arab disappointment aside, there's enough in Emanuel's background to raise a fair question of whether the key appointment of such a demonstratively pro-Israel figure is going to help or hurt the prospects for Obama's avowed plans to play an effective role in brokering Middle East peace.

The Tactics Of the Israel Lobby
11.03.09. Charles Freeman, WSJ / ICH. I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office. The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country. I agreed to chair the NIC to strengthen it and protect it against politicization, not to introduce it to efforts by a special interest group to assert control over it through a protracted political campaign. ... I am saddened by what the controversy and the manner in which the public vitriol of those who devoted themselves to sustaining it have revealed about the state of our civil society. It is apparent that we Americans cannot any longer conduct a serious public discussion or exercise independent judgment about matters of great importance to our country as well as to our allies and friends. ...
The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors. ...
There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government – in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.
Obama pick quits over Israel lobby
11.03.09. al jazeera. The candidate for a leading US intelligence post has withdrawn his nomination after accusing the country's Israel lobby of plumbing "the depths of dishonour and indecency" to assassinate his character. Charles "Chas" Freeman, a former US ambassador who is now president of the Middle East Policy Council think-tank, had initially agreed to chair the US National Intelligence Council that produces assessments of security issues. But on Tuesday he withdrew his nomination following what he called a "barrage of libellous distortions" of his record by the Israel lobby in the US.
Freeman Withdrawal Marks Victory for Israel Lobby
11.03.09. Daniel Luban and Jim Lobe, anti-war. mb. Chas Freeman withdrew from consideration for a top intelligence post in the Obama administration on Tuesday, following a vitriolic battle that pitted Republican lawmakers and pro-Israel hardliners opposed to his appointment against liberals and members of the intelligence and diplomatic communities who had come to his defense. Freeman's withdrawal came as a surprise to many in Washington, particularly since it came only hours after Adm. Dennis Blair, the administration's director of national intelligence (DNI) who made the appointment, issued a strong defense of Freeman during his testimony before the U.S. Senate.
Timidity Derails Obama Intel Choice
11.03.09. Ray McGovern, consortium. Goodman notes in this guest essay:

13.03.09. Justin Raimondo, anti-war. Forced to withdraw, he took the Israel lobby down with him . Charles "Chas" Freeman from a post as head of the National Intelligence Council is not, as is commonly averred, a victory for the Israel lobby. It is, instead, a Pyrrhic victory – that is, a victory so costly that it really amounts to a defeat for them. Sure, they managed to keep out a trenchant critic of their Israel-centric and grossly distorted view of a proper American foreign policy, and, yes, they managed to smear him and put others on notice that someone with his views is radioactive, as far as a high-level job in the foreign policy establishment is concerned. And yet – and yet …. They – the Lobby – have now been forced out in the open

Al Qaeda is still bent on carrying out terrorist activity. It is-- al Qaeda is still bent on carrying out terrorist activity. It is, you know, don't fool yourselves because some people say, well, you know, if we changed our policies with respect to Israeli/Palestinian conflict or if we were more respectful towards the Muslim world, suddenly, these organizations would stop threatening us.
That's just not the case. It is true that we have to change our behavior in showing the Muslim world greater respect and changing our language and changing our tone. It is true that we have to work very hard for Israeli/Palestinian peace.
But what is also true is that these organizations are willing to kill innocent people because of a twisted distorted ideology and we, as democracies and as people who value human life, can't allow those organizations to operate.

At Annual Meeting, Pro-Israel Group Reasserts Clout
04.05.09. NY Times. The formidable political strength of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the nation’s major pro-Israel lobby, has been on decidedly intentional display here in the last few days. … More than half the members of the House and Senate attended Monday night's dinner, which featured the group's "roll call" in which the lawmakers all rise. It is a conscious - and effective - effort to demonstrate the group's influence on Capitol Hill.
US pro-Israeli group attempts to stop shift in White House Middle East policy
05.05.09. Guardian. Aipac urges Congress members to sign letter to Barack Obama calling for Israel to set pace of negotiations with Palestinians.
The New Discourse on anti-Semitism
06.05.09. Shafiq Morton, uruknet. Those who criticize Israel or those who interrogate Zionism (the ism that gave birth to Israel) are often labeled "anti-Semitic" by the Zionist lobby. This lobby, a world-wide movement, is seen to be most influential in the United States where it vigorously defends the interests of Israel. To view Israel unsympathetically means vilification by this group: it avows political critique is something that threatens the existence of all Jews. Yet, ironically, some of the most ardent critics of Israel have been Jews – academics and political liberals who have not denigrated their Jewishness in any way because of their conscience...

Who will Stand Up To America and Israel?
27.05.09. Paul Craig Roberts, ICH. The military/security complex that rules America, together with the Israel Lobby and the financial banksters, needs a long list of dangerous enemies to keep the taxpayers' money flowing into its coffers.
Why is Dennis Ross being ousted as Obama envoy to Iran?
15.06.09. Haaretz. Dennis Ross, who most recently served as a special State Department envoy to Iran, will abruptly be relieved of his duties, sources in Washington told Haaretz. / Washington insiders speculate that a number of reasons moved the administration to reassign Ross. One possibility is Iran's persistent refusal to accept Ross as a U.S. emissary given the diplomat's Jewish background as well as his purported pro-Israel leanings. Ross is known to maintain contacts with numerous senior officials in Israel's defense establishment and the Israeli government. / Diplomatic sources in Jerusalem surmised that another possibility for Ross' ouster is his just-released book, "Myths, Illusions, and Peace - Finding a New Direction for America in the Middle East." / … Another possible reason for the reshuffle could be Ross' dissatisfaction with his present standing in the State Department.
U.S. foreign policy veteran Ross moves to White House
26.06.09. daily mail, uk. After only a few months as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's "Iran czar," Ross is moving to the White House, raising speculation about tensions within President Barack Obama's foreign policy team.
Summers & Geithner
A New Financial Foundation
15.06.09. Timothy Geithner and Lawrence Summers, Washington Post. In recent years, the pace of innovation in the financial sector has outstripped the pace of regulatory modernization, leaving entire markets and market participants largely unregulated.
Obama’s Economic Misfits Finally Get It
17.06.09. Robert Sheer, Truthdig. On Monday, two men with considerable responsibility for enabling the banking meltdown confronted the error of their ways. Not directly, of course, for accountability is hardly the mark of either Lawrence Summers, the top White House economic adviser, or Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Their careers have long been fueled by error. / … What they wrote this week in a joint Op-Ed article in The Washington Post is a condemnation of the Wall Street shenanigans they once abetted and celebrated. I hope their apparent sudden conversion to common sense indicates the seriousness of the banking regulation plan that President Obama will present to Congress today. / … According to Summers and Geithner, the Obama plan to be revealed today promises that all derivatives dealers will be “subject to supervision, and regulators will be empowered to enforce rules against manipulation and abuse.” / If such language is ever passed into law, I hope that Brooksley Born is in the gallery and gets the standing ovation she deserves. That’s the woman who, when she headed the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, warned that the derivatives market needed to be regulated. Summers and his predecessor as treasury secretary, Robert Rubin, destroyed Born’s career because she dared to accurately predict today’s crisis.
Obama's Prizes For Israel Are Not "Pressure"
16.07.09. Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada/Countercurrents. President Barack Obama received 16 leaders of the most prominent pro-Israel organizations at the White House. The gathering was an effort to assuage American Jewish concerns about US pressure on Israel over a settlement freeze in the occupied West Bank. / But rather than using American leverage to require Israel to comply with international law, the Obama administration is actually offering it more rewards at the expense of Palestinians and Arab states.
Clinton Outlines Continuation of Bush Policies Under Obama at CFR
19.07.09. Jeremy R. Hammond, ICH. Setting aside the platitudes that comprised most of Clinton's speech and looking closely at her remarks that actually spoke meaningfully towards U.S. policy under the Obama, a picture emerges, one not of a change of course from Bush but rather of near perfect continuity between the two administrations.
How Israel Lobby Took Control Of US Foreign Policy
19.07.09. Jeff Gates, ICH. In the early 1960s, Senator William J. Fulbright fought to force the American Zionist Council to register as agents of a foreign government. The Council eluded registration by reorganizing as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC has since become what Fulbright most feared: a foreign agent dominating American foreign policy while disguised as a domestic lobby.

The Unmentionable Source of Terrorism
20.03.04. John Pilger, anti-war. Israel is the guard dog of America's plans for the Middle East. / Until recently, a group of Zionists ran their own intelligence service inside the Pentagon. This was known as the Office of Special Plans, and was overseen by Douglas Feith, an under-secretary of defence, extreme Zionist and opponent of any negotiated peace with the Palestinians.
