What do I want to say about Anna Politkovskaya? Of her murder? She knew, and spoke about, her chances of being murdered. She accepted this, without drama.

I remember her intensity, her eyes, her glasses, her hair, her hands. I can still touch them.

She was a beacon of stillness and quiet light with awesome iron grit. Her focus was injustice. Her life helped many of us to be stronger.

And, like many, I grieve.

Two days later, in a chaotic battle between Russian security forces and the hostage-takers, 344 civilians - 186 of them children - died. Anna Politkovskaya visited the town that December, and again on the first anniversary of the atrocity. In the second of three extracts from the last book she wrote before being murdered, Politkovskaya details the unbearable grief of a town that 'spends most of its time at the cemetery'.
